Mini LED TVs could in the future use less energy and produce less heat. Korean company DB GlobalChip has unveiled Nebula AI technology, which aims to improve backlight efficiency. According to the manufacturer, internal tests reduced a TV’s operating temperature by as much as 26% and its energy consumption by 5%!
DB GlobalChip is working on new Mini LED backlight driver ICs. Their key feature is the integration of a microcontroller (MCU) and a power management IC (PMIC) into a single chip. The solution also uses artificial intelligence algorithms with learning capability to optimise backlight operation and minimise energy losses.
Cooler TVs and lower electricity bills?
During internal tests the manufacturer reported a 26% drop in the TV's operating temperature and a 5% reduction in power consumption compared with solutions using traditional chips. It is worth noting, however, that the company did not disclose a detailed testing methodology. Therefore it is unclear under what conditions these results were achieved or whether similar benefits will appear in finished TVs. DB GlobalChip plans to begin testing the new chips with potential customers late in 2026. Commercialisation of the technology is scheduled for 2027.
For now it is unclear which TVs will get Nebula AI. The Koreans plan to pitch the solution to major manufacturers, including Samsung and LG.
