Sony has patented a technology that could significantly improve gameplay smoothness on future PlayStation consoles. The solution is similar to NVIDIA's DLSS Frame Generation, but it has one interesting difference: it also uses controller input to predict player movements and generate additional frames.
The patent called "Generation Super Sampling" describes a system that uses artificial intelligence to generate additional frames between those rendered by the console. This would increase on-screen smoothness without the need to render every frame using traditional methods.
Can the console predict what you'll do?
The most interesting part of the solution is analysing controller inputs, such as button presses and analog stick movements. That could allow the system to predict a player's future actions and generate the appropriate frames, potentially reducing the latency associated with rendering them. However, it's unclear whether the technology will actually make it into the PlayStation 6. For now it's only a patent, and Sony hasn't confirmed implementation or published any test results.
If the solution proves effective in practice, future consoles could deliver smoother performance without a comparable increase in processing power.
