PlayStation 6 could be much more expensive than gamers expected. According to the latest information from well-known leaker Kepler_L2, just the RAM and the NAND used in the SSD are said to cost over $680! That’s more than the current US price of a standard PS5. Will Sony’s next console cross the psychological $1,000 mark?
Memory prices are driving up the cost
Kepler_L2, known for leaks about AMD hardware and consoles, shared new information on the NeoGAF forum. According to his estimates, the cost of RAM and NAND memory for the PlayStation 6 already exceeds $680. And you still have to add the CPU, GPU, cooling and other components.
This isn't the first worrying report. In March the leaker estimated the total cost of PS6 components at around $760. But at the end of June he reported a further increase of $200, which brought the cost to about $960 for the components alone.
Will the PlayStation 6 fall victim to the development of artificial intelligence?
Behind the rising costs is, among other things, huge demand for DRAM and NAND memory from data centres developing artificial intelligence. Limited supply and high component prices could significantly hinder Sony's ability to produce an affordable console. According to earlier leaks, the PS6 could get as much as 30 GB of GDDR7 memory, considerably more than a standard PS5. The specification, however, remains unconfirmed.
So will the PS6 really cost more than $1,000? It's a possible scenario, but for now it's pure speculation. Sony could decide to sell the console at a loss, and memory prices could change before launch.
The manufacturer has not yet revealed an official price, specification or release date for the PlayStation 6.
