Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, its latest flagship smartphones. The biggest changes concern the cameras, performance and battery life. The main Fusion 48 MP camera has, for the first time in iPhone history, a variable aperture, giving users greater control over photos and videos. Performance is handled by the new A20 Pro chip built on a 2 nm process, accompanied by a more advanced cooling system. In Poland, prices for the new models start at 6,299 PLN for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6,799 PLN for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The variable-aperture camera is the biggest new feature of the iPhone 18 Pro
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max feature a 48 MP Fusion main camera that Apple calls the most advanced camera system in the history of its smartphones. It’s also the first iPhone camera with a variable aperture. The mechanism uses six laser-cut blades that smoothly adjust the aperture opening. This lets the camera automatically adapt depth of field and the amount of light reaching the sensor. The maximum aperture is ƒ/1.48, which should improve image quality in low light. Users also get the option to manually select four aperture settings directly in the Camera app.
Developers can also use Apple’s provided APIs to control the aperture range in their apps. The new computational imaging pipeline aims to deliver sharper, more detailed photos. Apple has also enhanced Photographic Styles by adding new options for texture and grain. For video, Cinematic mode effects can now be added after recording footage at up to 60 fps. Time-lapse mode allows capture in 4K and Dolby Vision HDR. The Audio Mix feature has been improved with new algorithms that enhance voice clarity and better isolate music. A new addition is Pro controls, which let you manually adjust aperture, shutter speed and white balance, and use a histogram.
A20 Pro, cooling and battery to ensure high performance
At the heart of the new models is the A20 Pro chip, produced on the latest 2‑nanometre process. Apple has increased its cache bandwidth by 50 per cent compared with the A19 Pro. The chip features a six‑core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators and a seven‑core GPU. According to Apple, the GPU is up to 40 per cent faster than the solution used in the A19 Pro. The A20 Pro also uses a dual 16‑core Neural Engine, 32 cores in total, dedicated among other things to AI tasks and computational photography. The new cooling system uses a vapour chamber inspired by solutions from Apple’s M‑series chips. Its surface area is three times larger than the chamber used in the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple says this delivers up to a 40 per cent increase in sustained chip performance. The new smartphones also get Apple’s N1 chip for Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.
Apple is also debuting the C2 cellular modem, which is designed to provide more reliable connectivity using AI and to consume 15 per cent less power than the C1X. Battery life has been a major focus, especially for the larger model. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro allows up to 34 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 43 hours. The iPhone 18 Pro can be charged to 50 per cent in about 15 minutes wired or about 30 minutes wirelessly. For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, five minutes of wired charging is said to be enough for around seven hours of video playback.
Reference Image, Dynamic Island and new features
Apple has also introduced the Reference Image feature, designed to help verify the authenticity of photos taken with the iPhone 18 Pro. A special main camera sensor tags each recorded pixel, and the saved data can be converted into an immutable reference image. It can later be compared with the main photo in the Photos app to check whether the material has been altered. The feature could be useful, among other things, in professional photography and photojournalism. Apple also points to the importance of metadata and future support for the SynthID standard in identifying images generated or modified by AI.
The area occupied by Dynamic Island has been reduced, although its capabilities have been expanded. The system can now display up to three live events at once. Dynamic Island still supports Face ID, which is used, among other things, to unlock the phone and authorise purchases. The new models run iOS 27, which introduces, among other things, further customisation of the Liquid Glass interface.
Apple also lists new features related to child safety management and Handoff, which, in certain conditions, allows seamless switching between two iPhones while retaining the same phone number. The smartphones will be available in four colours: black, silver, Glacier Blue and a new burgundy. They will be sold in 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB storage configurations. Pre-orders begin on 12 September, and regular sales start on 18 September. In Poland the iPhone 18 Pro starts at 6,299 zł, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at 6,799 zł.
