Samsung Display may end the final quarter of 2026 with significantly weaker financial results. This is due to a reduction in orders for smartphone components from the company's two biggest customers, Apple and Samsung Electronics. The main cause is rising memory chip prices, which are increasingly weighing on electronics manufacturers.

Apple and Samsung cut orders

According to South Korean outlet The Investor, Samsung's mobile division asked suppliers to reduce component shipments in the fourth quarter by 20 to 30% compared with earlier plans. Apple, meanwhile, is said to have cut October orders for selected parts for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max by 15 to 20%.

This is potentially a big problem for Samsung Display. According to financial data for 2025, customers associated with Apple and Samsung Electronics together accounted for 62.8% of the manufacturer's revenue. Fewer orders for expensive OLED panels could therefore have a significant impact on its profits.

Are rising memory prices to blame for everything?

The main cause of the changes is said to be a sharp rise in DRAM prices. Semiconductor manufacturers are allocating a growing share of production capacity to memory for AI data centres, which increases the cost of components used in smartphones.

Samsung Display may also feel pressure to cut prices of OLED panels. Phone makers are trying to curb costs by negotiating better terms with suppliers.

For now it is unclear how much impact these changes will have on Samsung Display’s results. The reports mainly concern smartphone displays, so they cannot be used to predict price drops for TVs or OLED monitors.
