Microsoft has announced a significant new feature for gamers using computers. Already in April, a new Xbox Mode will appear in Windows 11, which is set to change the way games are used on PCs. The new mode will transform the computer into something akin to an Xbox console. Once activated, the user will see a full-screen interface optimised for a controller, thus eliminating the need for a mouse or keyboard.
PC will function like a console
Xbox Mode is set to offer a simplified interface for browsing the game library, launching titles, and utilising features such as Xbox Game Bar. The entire setup has been designed with the intention of gaming on a large screen, e.g., a television in the living room. Microsoft aims to combine the convenience of a console with the openness of the PC platform. This solution has previously been tested on devices such as the ROG Xbox Ally, which are portable gaming computers running on Windows.
The new mode will also be closely linked with the Xbox Play Anywhere service. This programme already encompasses over 1500 games that can be launched both on Xbox consoles and on computers. As a result, game saves, achievements, and progress will synchronise across different devices. A player can start gaming on a console and then continue on a computer or laptop.
Xbox Mode could be one of the biggest changes in PC gaming for years. If Microsoft realises its intentions, computers with Windows 11 will be able to operate almost like consoles, offering a simple interface, controller support, and quick access to the games library. For many gamers, this could mean significantly more comfortable gaming on PC, especially in the living room on a large screen.
