South Korea has approved a major research programme aimed at developing OLED technology and the displays of the future. Approximately $274 million has been allocated to the Advanced Display project, of which $207 million will come from the government budget. The initiative will start in 2027 and run for seven years. South Koreans hope this will help them maintain a technological lead over increasingly strong competition from China.
Not just OLED. Korea is already thinking about its successor
The programme covers three key areas. Over OLED aims to improve the parameters of current panels, including colour reproduction and energy efficiency. Cross OLED will focus on screens equipped with additional functions, for example biometric sensors, and Post OLED on technologies that could replace current organic displays in the future.
Plans also include creating a research centre in Asan, near Samsung Display's main production complex. The centre is intended to support the entire display development process, from design to testing of finished panels.
For the TV market, this is an important signal. New investments could speed up the development of brighter, more energy-efficient and cheaper-to-manufacture displays. However, tangible results will have to wait, as the project will not start until next year.
