According to technology market analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the MacBook Air laptop will receive an OLED display only around 2028 or 2029. This means that users waiting for such a change will have to be patient. Although Apple has not officially confirmed these plans, Kuo is known for his accurate forecasts regarding Apple's supply chain.
MacBook Pro first with OLED
Before OLED technology makes its way to the MacBook Air, Apple plans to implement it in the MacBook Pro model. According to forecasts, the new displays may appear in this series as early as the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027. Interestingly, in addition to the OLED itself, the MacBook Pro may also receive a touch panel, which would be a significant change in Apple's approach to laptops. The company has avoided introducing touch screens in Mac computers for years.
Apple often introduces new technologies first in the more expensive models. This was the case, among others, with Retina displays and ProMotion technology, which initially appeared in MacBook Pros. The second reason is cost. OLED panels are more expensive to produce than the LCD displays currently used in MacBook Airs. Therefore, Apple must maintain an appropriate cost level to ensure the laptop remains competitively priced.
If analysts' forecasts prove accurate, users planning to purchase a MacBook Air in the near future should not postpone their decision solely because of the upcoming OLED. Waiting several years for a new type of display may be impractical, especially since the current models already offer very good image quality and high performance.
It appears that Apple will introduce OLED technology in laptops in stages. We will first see it in the MacBook Pro, and only later in the popular MacBook Air. If analysts' predictions are confirmed, Air users will have to wait for this change until the end of the decade.
