The iPad Air will finally get OLED, and this could be the biggest change in years, but not without compromises.

Calendar 4/16/2026

It seems that Apple is finally preparing one of the most anticipated changes in its tablet line-up. According to the latest reports, the next generation of the iPad Air is set to receive an OLED screen, which marks the end of the LCD era for this model. This is a significant change, especially since the Air has long been something in between the basic iPad and the Pro version; it can now significantly approach the higher-end range.

OLED in the iPad Air changes everything

The biggest advantage of the new panel will undoubtedly be the image quality. OLED means deeper blacks, better contrast, and more saturated colours, which will be especially appreciated by those watching movies, working with graphics, or simply using the device every day. This is also a step towards standardising Apple's offering as currently only the iPad Pro offers this type of display. Thanks to this change, the iPad Air could become significantly more attractive to those who want high-quality images but don't necessarily need the most expensive model. If all goes according to plan, the launch could take place in the first half of 2027.

Cheaper OLED and no 120 Hz

However, not everything looks ideal. According to leaks, Apple is set to use a cheaper LTPS OLED panel instead of the more advanced solution known from the iPad Pro. In practice, this means that the screen will likely remain at 60 Hz, without support for ProMotion 120 Hz. For most users, this will not be a big issue, but gamers and more demanding users may notice the difference. This is also a classic Apple strategy to reserve certain features exclusively for the more expensive models, in order to maintain a clear distinction between the series.

iPad Air with OLED is a big step forward for Apple’s mid-range, but the company will still keep an eye on the boundary between Air and Pro.
