Sony recently wanted to make a strong entry into the mobile gaming market, but everything indicates that this plan is now falling apart. New information is emerging about layoffs primarily affecting the mobile division of PlayStation Studios. Additionally, there are studio closures before they managed to release any games. The company has not commented on the situation so far, which only increases the uncertainty surrounding the entire project. More and more suggests that Sony's mobile expansion may be coming to an end.
Layoffs and Studio Closures
Sony, according to reports, has laid off approximately 50 employees from teams related to mobile gaming. Additionally, the Dark Outlaw Games studio was recently closed before it could release its first title. This is a clear signal that something is going awry with PlayStation's mobile strategy.
PlayStation Studios had an ambitious plan to transfer its well-known brands to smartphones. IPs such as Horizon and Ratchet & Clank were considered. The problem is that the projects did not generate much interest, and the strategy itself appeared inconsistent. The mobile market is very demanding and it is difficult to compete without strong backing and a clear vision.
What about the announced games
Projects such as Horizon Steel Frontiers and Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble are now in question. There is a real risk that some of them will be cancelled before release, especially if Sony is indeed cutting back on investments in mobile.
