Sony and TSMC are joining forces. New sensors for AI, robots, and smartphones will be created.

Sony and TSMC have announced a collaboration regarding the development of a new generation of image sensors and the construction of new production lines in Japan. The companies aim to jointly develop technologies used not only in smartphones but also in robotics, automotive, and artificial intelligence-based systems.

The new partnership involves the establishment of a joint venture, in which Sony will remain the main shareholder. The production and development of new sensors will take place in Sony's new factory in Kumamoto, Japan. TSMC will bring its experience in modern technological processes and large-scale semiconductor manufacturing to the project. The companies emphasise that this is not solely about traditional cameras for smartphones. Sensors used in AI systems, autonomous vehicles, and robotics are becoming increasingly important. It is precisely in these areas that the demand for fast and accurate image processing is growing the most today.

Samsung increasingly pressures Sony in the sensor market

Collaboration with TSMC could be very important for Sony also for business reasons. The company has dominated the market for photographic sensors for years, but recently Samsung has been pressing harder, gaining new customers and increasing its presence even in Apple devices. The new investment is intended to help Sony maintain its leading position while also increasing production capabilities. The Japanese government additionally plans to support the development of local semiconductor factories with huge subsidies. According to earlier information, support for Sony's new factory could reach as much as around 380 million dollars.
