Sonos cancels plans for streaming device

Project "Pinewood" cancelled

Some time ago we reported that Sonos was planning to launch its own streaming device, aimed at competing with Apple TV 4K and Google TV. Now, according to information provided by The Verge, the company has completely abandoned this project.

The device, developed under the codename "Pinewood", was already in beta testing and was set to debut in 2025. As recently as December 2024, Sonos confirmed its collaboration on the Ventura OS system, which was to power the new device.

Change of strategy under the new CEO

The new CEO of the company, Tom Conrad, has decided to cancel the project. According to reports, Sonos had planned for the device to serve as an audio hub in the living room and to offer, among other things, an HDMI switch. However, the company ultimately decided against entering the video devices market, and employees have already been informed of the change in strategy.

On the one hand, it's a shame, because the idea could have worked well in the premium segment, where Sonos devices sync wonderfully using their app. Such an accessory could have served as a natural extension of the company's ecosystem. On the other hand, the anticipated rather high price could have effectively limited its popularity, and the market could have quickly verified the profitability of such a solution...
