A new action RPG is coming to Xbox, which draws inspiration from soulslikes but approaches them in a completely different way. Sands of Aura does not want to punish the player for every mistake; instead, it focuses on exploration, character development, and more accessible combat. It's an interesting proposition for those who have been put off by classic, very demanding productions in this genre.
Soulslike, but less frustrating
Sands of Aura draws from soulslikes but forgoes their most punishing elements. The developers focused more on the story, characters, and development system than on an extreme level of difficulty. The game rewards engagement and experimentation rather than forcing perfection. This means that even less experienced players can enter this world without a sense of constant frustration.
The combat system is based on quick reactions to attacks, dodges, blocks, and special skills. A sense of rhythm in combat is key. At the same time, the game offers great freedom in character creation. Different weapons, armours, and talismans realistically change the gameplay style. You can create unconventional builds and experiment, which makes every playthrough look different.
The world built around exploration
The action takes place in a world where the ocean has disappeared, replaced by a sea of sand. The player travels between islands, discovering new locations and secrets. Exploration is an important element; instead of quickly moving across the map, one must actually traverse the world and discover it independently. This builds a sense of scale and adventure.
The console version introduces changes that improve the comfort of gameplay. One of the most important is the aim assist system, which makes fighting easier on the controller. A compass has also been added instead of the classic minimap, helping players orient themselves in the terrain without breaking immersion. The developers have also improved the balance to make fights more fluid and less punishing.
Sands of Aura is an intriguing alternative to classic soulslikes. It combines challenging combat with greater accessibility and an emphasis on exploration. For many players, this could be the ideal entry point into this genre – without unnecessary frustration, but maintaining the atmosphere and challenge.
