Netflix is degrading the app on Apple TV. Users are losing important features.

Netflix has introduced a change that may greatly irritate Apple TV users. The new app update removes some features and worsens the viewing experience, even though at first glance it seems like just a regular refresh. The problem is that underneath, the entire video playback method has changed. Instead of using Apple’s system solution, Netflix has opted for its own player. And this is where the problems begin.

Your own player instead of the system one

Netflix replaced the native tvOS player with its own solution in the app for Apple TV. At first glance, this means greater consistency with other platforms, but in practice, users lose many convenient features that were standard on Apple TV. This includes, among other things, quick scrolling with gestures, automatic subtitles, picture-in-picture mode, and advanced control through Siri and iPhone.

Fewer features, less control

The biggest problem is the fact that many options have not only disappeared, but they also cannot be restored while watching. Some settings still exist in the system, but they are not available directly in the Netflix player. Additionally, users do not have the option to revert to an older version of the app, which means that the change is enforced. This is another example of how streaming platforms are increasingly prioritising their own solutions at the expense of integration with the system.

Netflix has opted for its own ecosystem, but it has done so at the expense of user convenience. The result is that the app on Apple TV performs worse than before, even though it was theoretically supposed to be improved.
