The market for physical media is not dead yet – and Magnetar has just proven this with a flourish. The manufacturer unveiled two new flagship 4K Blu-ray players in September, and they are now officially available for sale in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the USA. We are talking about the Magnetar UDP900MKII and UDP800MKII – equipment that targets the absolute high-end and is designed to handle practically every format that can be loaded into the tray or streamed from the network.
Significant Improvements Over Predecessors
The previous models UDP900 and UDP800 from 2023 were regarded as some of the best players on the market. The "MKII" takes it a step further – Magnetar has replaced the heart of the devices, introducing a significantly more powerful video processor. The result? more accurate colours, stronger contrast, better noise reduction, and clearer upscaling. The audio section has also been refined – the new signal architecture aims to provide cleaner sound and lower distortion when playing high-resolution formats.
New connections, better drive and aluminium sturdy casing
Both models receive USB 3.0 with isolated power supply and dedicated hubs, which improves the compatibility and stability of external drives. The optical drive has been redesigned to operate more quietly and precisely. Additionally, there is a reinforced aluminium construction with a double layer of shielding against interference.
What are the differences between the UDP900MKII and UDP800MKII models?
Magnetar UDP900MKII – absolute top. The most expensive model is equipped with:
two ESS 9038 PRO DAC converters (reference class),
HDMI audio with TMDS eliminating jitter,
support for PCM up to 768 kHz and DSD512,
expanded network functionality.
In short: it’s a player for those who treat home cinema like a temple.
Magnetar UDP800MKII – strong mid high-end. The cheaper model still offers great specifications:
seven operational amplifiers OPA1602,
more precise HDMI jitter correction,
better EMI shielding,
enhanced optical mechanism and copper cables.
Both models support SACD, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and in terms of sound Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
Although various companies are leaving the segment (Oppo, LG, Pioneer, Reavon), Magnetar demonstrates that there is still a place for high-end. Apart from it, only Sony and Panasonic remain in the game. This is good news for collectors and fans of reference quality.
