CATL has presented new technologies that could completely change the way we view electric cars. The most attention-grabbing is the third generation of Shenxing batteries, which, according to the manufacturer, can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 4 minutes, and nearly to full in just over 6 minutes. This pace is starting to compete with traditional refuelling, which has so far been one of the greatest advantages of combustion engine vehicles.
Charging as fast as refuelling
The new Shenxing battery is designed to operate quickly not only in ideal conditions but also in challenging climates. Even at minus 30 degrees, it is possible to charge it to nearly full in about 9 minutes. This is a significant change, as low temperatures have been one of the biggest issues for electric vehicles. Additionally, CATL claims that the battery will retain over 90 percent of its capacity after 1000 charging cycles, meaning that fast charging no longer needs to equate to faster degradation.
Even greater range and new technologies
Aside from Shenxing, the company also showcased the next-generation Qilin battery, which is said to offer a range of up to 1000 kilometres on a single charge. Moreover, it is lighter than previous solutions, improving the vehicle's performance and reducing tyre wear. CATL is also developing batteries for hybrids, which can provide up to 600 km of driving on electric power alone, as well as sodium-ion batteries, which are set to enter mass production in 2026 and perform better in extreme conditions.
New solutions from CATL show that the biggest problems of electric cars, namely charging time and range, are starting to disappear rapidly. If these technologies enter mass production, the difference between electric vehicles and combustion cars may cease to matter sooner than many expected.
