Earthquake in Hollywood: Netflix withdraws from the purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery

Calendar 3/1/2026

Netflix, which was already on the verge of finalising its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (along with the HBO brand), has officially withdrawn from the signed agreement. This decision paves the way for a new player and completely changes the balance of power in global streaming.

Paramount wins the bidding war

Although the agreement with Netflix for the amount of 83 billion dollars has already been signed, Paramount did not cease its efforts to take over Warner. Paramount's final offer amounts to an astronomical sum of 111 billion dollars. The management of Warner Bros. Discovery deemed this proposal more advantageous and recommended it to shareholders as a "superior offer." It is worth mentioning that this situation is unprecedented, considering the advanced stage of previous discussions with Netflix.

The Financial Consequences of the Great Merger

The decision to terminate the agreement has complicated consequences for both parties. Netflix, despite losing the chance to acquire the HBO library, emerges from this situation with billions of dollars in cash (likely as part of contractual penalties or saved capital), which it can allocate to the production of its own content. Meanwhile, Paramount, having won the battle, must face enormous debt that will burden the company for years.
