ChatGPT introduces interactive mathematics lessons. The new feature is designed to aid learning.

OpenAI is developing the educational capabilities of ChatGPT and introducing a feature designed to facilitate learning in mathematics and the sciences. The new solution allows users to take advantage of interactive visualisations, enabling them to see how formulas, numbers, and mathematical relationships change in real time. Until now, most explanations in AI chatbots have primarily relied on text. Now users can manipulate the values in equations and observe the effects directly on interactive diagrams.

Learning through experimentation

The new feature allows users to change numerical values in mathematical tasks and instantly see how it affects the outcome. This way, users not only obtain a solution but also better understand the relationships between the individual elements of the formula. For example, while learning about the Pythagorean theorem, one can change the lengths of the sides of a triangle and observe how it impacts the length of the hypotenuse. Such an approach enables a deeper understanding of how formulas work rather than merely memorising their forms.

Initially, the feature covers over 70 topics in mathematics and physics. Among these are formulas related to the area of a circle, linear equations, Ohm's law, Hooke's law, Coulomb's law, and calculations of kinetic energy. OpenAI has announced, however, that the list of topics will gradually be expanded with additional educational modules.

ChatGPT increasingly in education

Interactive visualisations are the next step in developing the educational features of ChatGPT. Previously, OpenAI introduced, among other things, a learning mode, which guides the user through the stages of solving a problem instead of providing the ready answer. There is also a feature for creating quizzes and flashcards, which can assist in preparing for tests and exams. The new tools in ChatGPT demonstrate that artificial intelligence is increasingly being used as support in education. Interactive visualisations can significantly facilitate the understanding of difficult mathematical and physical concepts, and in the future, similar solutions may also appear in other fields of science.
