The price increase of the PlayStation 5 may just be the beginning of a larger problem in the gaming industry. Sony has already decided to raise the price of the PlayStation 5 by as much as £100 in selected regions. This is a response to the increasing costs of components, particularly memory, which is becoming more expensive due to the huge demand from the AI industry. Added to this are supply chain problems and overall inflation, which make it increasingly difficult to maintain previous prices. Manufacturing hardware is no longer profitable at old rates, and companies are unwilling to sell consoles at a loss.
Xbox and Nintendo may be next
For now, Microsoft and Nintendo have not announced any changes, but analysts are under no illusions. If costs continue to rise, price increases may only be a matter of time. In the case of Xbox, the situation is particularly interesting, as the company has previously experimented with prices while simultaneously developing the Game Pass service. Meanwhile, Nintendo is focused on maintaining the competitiveness of the new Nintendo Switch 2, but even it may not escape changes if cost pressure persists.
Console manufacturers have been balancing between an attractive price for the hardware and the real costs of its production for years. They often sell consoles with minimal margins or even at a loss, counting on profits from games and services. However, the situation is now changing. Rising costs are making it increasingly difficult to maintain this model. If nothing changes, more expensive consoles could become the new norm, and players will have to get used to it.
