If you've ever found yourself tapping on your laptop screen and feeling that it isn't as responsive as your phone, we have good news. Changes are on the way that will make using a computer with your finger finally a pleasure, not a struggle with unresponsive hardware. All thanks to new technology from Himax.

Himax – a giant you probably haven't heard of

Before we get to the news, it's worth knowing who we're dealing with. Himax Technologies is a company from Taiwan that is the "brain" hidden in millions of screens around the world. They don't produce the displays themselves or entire laptops, but they create what’s most important – small chips (controllers) that tell the screen how to display images and how to respond to your touch. You'll find their technology in cars, televisions, and even virtual reality goggles. They're the "unsung heroes" of the tech industry.

Gone are the days of a “lagging” touch

Himax has just announced that their latest invention has entered mass production. What does this mean for the average laptop user with an OLED screen?

  1. Faster response: The screen will respond to touch without delays.

  2. Better precision: The new chips can effectively differentiate between a finger touch and random electrical interference. This means gesture controls (e.g. zooming in on images) will work perfectly every time.

  3. Better picture: The new method of mounting these controllers ensures that the touch layer doesn’t “interfere” with the screen itself. The image remains crystal clear, and the colours (as is typical with OLEDs) will be even more stunning.

When will laptops with this new feature hit the shops?

The biggest global brands are already working on new models of computers with Himax technology. The first laptops equipped with these smart chips will start rolling out from factories in early 2026. So, if you're planning to upgrade your equipment in a year or two, get ready for a whole new level of comfort while working.
