South Korea has approved a massive research programme aimed at developing OLED technology and future displays. About $274 million has been allocated to the Advanced Display project, of which $207 million will come from the state budget. The initiative will start in 2027 and run for seven years. South Korea hopes this will help maintain its technological edge against increasingly strong competition from China.
Not just OLED. Korea is already thinking about its successor
The programme covers three key areas. Over OLED aims to improve the parameters of current panels, including colour reproduction and energy efficiency. Cross OLED will focus on displays equipped with additional functions, such as biometric sensors, and Post OLED on technologies that in the future could replace current organic displays.
Plans also include creating a research centre in Asan, near Samsung Display's main production complex. The centre is intended to support the entire display development process, from design to testing finished panels.
For the television market this is an important signal. New investments could speed up the development of brighter, more energy-efficient and cheaper-to-produce displays. Concrete results will have to wait, however, because the project will only begin next year.
