YouTube is introducing a feature that many people have been waiting for a long time - the ability to practically remove Shorts from the main screen. The new option expands the earlier time limit system and gives users significantly greater control over how many short videos they actually watch. And for many, this is a big change because Shorts have long been one of the most addictive elements of the platform.
Shorts may completely disappear from the homepage
The main new feature is the ability to set a Shorts limit to 0 minutes per day. In practice, this means that short videos will no longer appear on the homepage of the app. They don't disappear completely from YouTube, but they stop being aggressively pushed to the user with every visit. If you still try to watch them, the platform will show a message about reaching the limit. It's a simple but effective way to reduce mindless scrolling, which has been the biggest problem for many users.
Greater control and fewer distractions
The new feature fits into the growing trend of giving users more control over their time spent in apps. Similar solutions are already offered by other platforms, but YouTube takes it a step further by allowing users to effectively “cut out” Shorts without needing to uninstall the entire app. This option is already available for parental accounts, where it operates even more restrictively; children cannot simply skip the message and scroll on. For standard accounts, the feature is being gradually rolled out and may be available to all users in the near future.
