Xbox with the March update. New features, backgrounds and more cloud gaming.

Calendar 3/26/2026

Microsoft is rolling out another major update for Xbox. The March update brings new features for the console, changes for Insiders, and advancements in cloud gaming, along with some interesting announcements from GDC. This is one of those updates that not only improves the system but also shows the direction the entire Xbox ecosystem is heading.

New console features and greater personalisation

The biggest changes first arrive in the Xbox Insider programme. Users can now add more groups on the home screen, set their own system colours, and manage Quick Resume for specific games. This is important because Quick Resume doesn’t always work perfectly, so the ability to disable it for selected titles provides more control. New elements are also appearing in profiles, such as recently earned badges, which are meant to highlight player activity.

At GDC, Microsoft also revealed more about the future of the platform. One of the more interesting topics is Project Helix, which is a new generation of hardware designed to combine console and PC gaming. In addition, the development of Xbox features on Windows 11 shows that the line between platforms is becoming increasingly blurred. Microsoft is clearly focusing on a single ecosystem rather than separate devices.

Cloud gaming and Play Anywhere are gaining strength

Xbox is heavily developing cloud gaming as well. Now you can stream over 1000 games that you already own without the need for installation. Additionally, the Play Anywhere program has exceeded 1500 titles, meaning that by purchasing a game once, you can play on different devices at no extra cost. This is one of Xbox's biggest advantages and something that increasingly sets it apart from the competition.

Microsoft is also enhancing support for various control methods. More and more games support mouse and keyboard as well as touch controls, especially in the cloud. On top of that, there are new dynamic backgrounds inspired by games, allowing for even more personalisation of the console.

The March Xbox update shows a clear direction of more freedom, more devices, and a greater emphasis on the cloud. It's not a revolution, but another step towards a platform that unites console, PC, and mobile gaming into one system.
