Microsoft has announced a significant new feature for gamers using computers. In April, a new Xbox Mode will be introduced in Windows 11, which aims to change the way games are used on PC. This new mode will allow users to turn their computer into something resembling an Xbox console. Once activated, the user will see a full-screen interface optimised for controllers, meaning there's no need to use a mouse or keyboard.
PC will work like a console
Xbox Mode aims to provide a streamlined interface for browsing the game library, launching titles, and using features such as Xbox Game Bar. The whole system is designed with large screen gaming in mind, for example, on a lounge TV. Microsoft wants to combine the convenience of a console with the openness of the PC platform. This solution was previously tested on devices like ROG Xbox Ally, which are portable gaming PCs running Windows.
The new mode will also be closely linked to the Xbox Play Anywhere service. The program already includes over 1500 games that can be played on both Xbox consoles and computers. This allows game saves, achievements, and progress to sync across different devices. A player can start playing on a console and then continue on a computer or laptop.
Xbox Mode could be one of the biggest changes in PC gaming in years. If Microsoft realises its goals, computers with Windows 11 will be able to operate almost like consoles, offering a simple interface, controller support, and quick access to the game library. For many gamers, this could mean significantly more convenient gaming on PC, especially in the lounge on a big screen.
