Xbox earns hundreds of millions from PlayStation games on PS5

Microsoft and its Xbox brand are increasingly moving away from a strategy of complete exclusivity. The latest data shows that releasing games on PlayStation 5 is starting to pay off. According to reports, Microsoft has already made around 667 million dollars from selling its titles on Sony's console, and this doesn’t include major hits like Call of Duty. This is a clear signal that the gaming industry is entering a new era, where not only the platform matters, but above all reach and the number of players.

Multiplatform is worth it

The biggest success has been Forza Horizon 5, which sold millions of copies on PS5, clearly outpacing other titles. Games like Sea of Thieves and Grounded have also performed well, showing that even productions previously associated only with Xbox can find a large audience on a competing platform. However, not all releases have been equally successful; some titles sold significantly worse, indicating that simply being present on PS5 does not guarantee success. Nevertheless, the overall outcome is very positive. Importantly, these figures do not include the largest brands, meaning that actual revenues could be even higher. This only strengthens the argument that the strategy of releasing games on multiple platforms makes business sense and could become the new standard in the industry.

Xbox changes strategy - end of exclusivity?

The shift in approach is not accidental. Xbox is currently undergoing a transformation, trying to rebuild its position after a tougher period. The decision to publish games on PS5 is a way to increase revenue and reach more players, but it also raises questions about the future of exclusivity. On one hand, announcements of new titles for PlayStation are emerging, while on the other hand, there are rumours about a possible return to a more closed ecosystem. For the moment, however, it seems that Microsoft is opting for flexibility. Instead of competing solely on hardware, the company wants to win with the content and availability of its games. If this model holds, it could completely change the way we perceive the competition between platforms.

Xbox proves that making money on competing platforms makes sense. Hundreds of millions of dollars from PS5 is a strong argument for further developing the multiplatform strategy.
