Vimeo steps into the world of 3D: support for VR180 and Apple Immersive Video!

Calendar 10/24/2025

Vimeo adds support for VR180 and Apple Immersive Video! Vision Pro gains a new home for 3D films, while YouTube completely disappears from visionOS.

YouTube doesn't want to collaborate with Apple Vision Pro? Vimeo is taking this opportunity. The platform has just announced support for the formats VR180, Apple Immersive Video, and Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP) – thus becoming the new home for 3D creators in the Apple ecosystem.

Vimeo replaces YouTube on visionOS

During the Vimeo Reframe event, the expansion of the platform’s features to include full 3D video support was announced. Some of the new features are already available, and support for Apple formats is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2025.

“Users can now publish content in the VR180 format, and support for Apple Immersive Video and Apple Projected Media Profile will be available in Q4. This will enable creators to record with Blackmagic cameras, edit in Final Cut Pro, and distribute directly through Vimeo,” the company announced.

Google gives up, Vimeo takes the reins

Google has decided not to release a YouTube app for visionOS – not even in the 2D version known from the iPad. Interestingly, YouTube VR is still operational on Android XR, including the new Samsung Galaxy XR, but Vision Pro users are left with nothing.

As a result, Vimeo is quickly filling this gap and positioning itself as the main 3D video platform for Apple Vision Pro. Simply download the Vimeo app on visionOS to access VR180 content and (soon) Apple Immersive.

Apple Immersive Video — a new level of realism

The biggest change may turn out to be support for Apple Immersive Video — a format that has so far only been available in the Apple TV app. This is content in 8K 3D 90 fps, created using the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera, offering an incredibly realistic depth and immersion effect in the image.

Apple opened this format to external creators only in 2025, and Vimeo is the first major platform to fully implement it.

APMP – one profile, many formats

Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP) is a new standard introduced at WWDC 2025, designed to combine support for VR180, VR360, and widescreen (Wide FOV).

In practice, it’s a way to unify the format for 3D, VR, and panoramic films – ideal for new Apple devices like Vision Pro or future AR goggles. YouTube can rest easy in the 2D world, but in the realm of immersive 3D video, Vimeo is taking the lead.

With support for VR180, Apple Immersive Video, and APMP, the platform has a chance to become the hub for 3D creativity within the Apple ecosystem – from production, through editing, to distribution on Vision Pro.
