Netflix is doing something it almost never does. One of its biggest productions, Stranger Things, is getting a physical release in a complete collection. This is a significant change for a platform that has focused almost exclusively on streaming for years.
25 discs and a complete collection for fans
The new release of the “Complete Series” will include all the seasons of the series and will be released on a whopping 25 Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray discs. There will be two versions: standard and deluxe. The latter will include additional materials, including a book, posters, and bonuses for collectors. The premiere is scheduled for July, and the set will be available in countries such as the USA and the UK.
This is an interesting move, as Netflix has avoided physical releases for years. The platform did start out as a DVD rental service but eventually shifted entirely to streaming. The release of Stranger Things is an exception rather than the norm. However, this time the creators of the series wanted to ensure its preservation for years, regardless of the platform. This could be important for fans who prefer to own their favourite productions rather than just have them in a subscription.
Best Picture and Sound Quality
The UHD Blu-ray version will offer 4K, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos for newer seasons, which means the highest possible picture and sound quality. This is something that even streaming doesn't always provide in such a stable form. Older seasons will also receive improved quality, although with different audio formats. There are questions about whether Netflix will go further in this direction. Fans are already suggesting more titles that could make it to discs. For now, everything depends on the success of this release. If sales are good, it's possible that we will see more of these collections.
Release of Stranger Things on UHD Blu-ray is a big event for fans and collectors. Netflix is taking a rare step beyond streaming, offering a physical version of one of its biggest hits.
This could be a test that shows whether there is still a market for such releases.
