Sony recently wanted to strongly enter the mobile gaming market, but everything suggests that this plan is now falling apart. There are new reports of layoffs affecting mainly the mobile division of PlayStation Studios. Additionally, studios are closing before they have released any games. The company has not commented on the situation yet, which only increases the uncertainty surrounding the entire project. More and more indications suggest that Sony's mobile expansion may be coming to an end.
Layoffs and Studio Closures
Sony has reportedly laid off around 50 employees from its mobile gaming teams. Additionally, the Dark Outlaw Games studio was recently closed before it could release its first title. This is a clear signal that something is going wrong with PlayStation's mobile strategy.
PlayStation Studios had an ambitious plan to move its well-known franchises to smartphones. IPs like Horizon and Ratchet & Clank were in the mix. The problem is that the projects did not generate much interest, and the strategy itself seemed inconsistent. The mobile market is very demanding, and it is difficult to compete in it without strong backing and a clear vision.
What about the announced games
Projects such as Horizon Steel Frontiers and Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble are now in question. There is a real risk that some of them will be cancelled before release, especially if Sony is indeed cutting back on mobile investments.
It seems that Sony is starting to withdraw from the idea of conquering the mobile market and may return to focusing on what works best on consoles and major AAA productions. This could be a sensible move, but at the same time it demonstrates that even big brands do not have guaranteed success outside of their main segment.
