Sony has just made one of the biggest moves in its television business in years. The company has struck a deal with TCL to create a new company responsible for TV and audio equipment. This means that Sony is giving up majority control over this segment, although it still remains in the game. Sony and TCL Join Forces
Sony and TCL have officially confirmed the signing of an agreement to create a joint venture in the home entertainment segment. The new company will be controlled by 51% by TCL, while Sony will retain 49%. In practice, this means that TCL will take the lead role in managing this business.
TCL will pay approximately 650 million dollars for the majority stake in the new venture. As part of the agreement, it will also take full control of the production segment, including the Sony EMCS company responsible for manufacturing equipment. The new company will handle everything from design and production to the sale of televisions, audio systems, and displays.
BRAVIA remains, but the backend is changing
Despite the changes, products will still be sold under the Sony and BRAVIA brands. For customers, this means no revolution at first glance, but in the background, the dynamics of who is actually behind the production of the equipment is changing. TCL will supply the technology, including panels and components, and will also handle manufacturing. The new company is set to commence operations in April 2027, provided all regulatory approvals are granted. This gives both companies time to iron out the details and prepare the first products.
This move could have significant implications for the entire industry. TCL is already one of the largest players and is increasingly closing in on the market leaders. The combination of TCL technology and the Sony brand could create a very strong competitor that changes the balance of power in the world of televisions.
