Samsung has announced a breakthrough in display technology that could bring 3D back to the mainstream this time without the need for glasses. The new solution has been developed in collaboration with scientists and described in a prestigious scientific journal, suggesting that it is not just a marketing announcement, but a real step forward. The technology is set to improve both the quality of 2D and 3D images, as well as address the biggest issues of previous attempts to introduce 3D on a large scale.
Metalens and the new generation of 3D
The new approach is based on the development of light field technology, but the key role is played by the so-called metalens ultra-thin lenses, which can change their properties under the influence of voltage. This allows the screen to dynamically switch between 2D and 3D mode without loss of image quality. Importantly, the solution significantly increases the 3D viewing angle to about 100 degrees, meaning that several people can watch the image simultaneously without the effect of "misaligned" perspective. Compared to older technologies that offered very narrow viewing angles and required eye tracking, this is a significant step forward.
Will 3D really make a comeback?
Samsung is already testing this technology in practice, integrating it with OLED panels similar to those used in smartphones. For now, the company is focusing on mobile devices and professional applications, such as medicine and augmented reality, but the potential is much greater. The possible return of 3D to TVs and gaming seems feasible, especially since the manufacturer has previously announced the development of glasses-free 3D gaming. However, there is still no specific implementation date, so for now, it remains a technology of the future, although much closer than it was just a few years ago.
Samsung's new technology could solve the biggest problems that previously buried 3D in televisions. If it can be rolled out on a larger scale, glasses-free 3D may finally become a real alternative to traditional imagery.
