The new generation of consoles may be significantly more expensive than before. Analysts predict that PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix may launch at prices up to 50% higher than current models. This means that a figure around $1000 is no longer unrealistic.
Why such prices?
The main reason is the rising production costs. Memory, components, and technologies needed to create consoles have significantly increased in price, partly due to the development of AI, which "eats up" hardware resources. Additionally, there are problems with supply chains and the economic situation that affects electronics prices worldwide.
The current generation is already signalling changes. The price of the PlayStation 5 Pro nearing $900 indicates that manufacturers are preparing the market for higher amounts. Analysts believe this is a deliberate strategy – it's better to raise prices earlier than to do it gradually.
If the forecasts prove correct, gaming on consoles may become less accessible than before. A price around $1000 will make the purchase a bigger investment. This could change the entire market, with more players potentially moving to PC or cloud services.
There are also voices suggesting that the new Xbox could be key to the future of the whole brand. If the project fails, Microsoft may limit or even end hardware development. This shows how important the next generation will be for the entire industry.
