Sony today launched Live TV on PS5, which lets PlayStation 5 owners watch ad-supported TV for free. Initially the service is available to gamers in the United States. The service offers more than 100 live channels plus additional on-demand content. The lineup includes movies, TV shows, anime, sport, news and content from online creators. Sony says this will make it easier for users to discover free entertainment directly from the console.
Over 100 channels on PlayStation 5
Live TV on PS5 was launched as a free, ad-supported service and is available in the console's Media section. To start watching, users need to open the Media tab on the PS5 home screen. Then select the Live TV on PS5 icon and sign in with a PlayStation account. Sony prepared a wide selection of programmes from various categories for the launch. Movie fans get channels such as MovieSphere by Lionsgate, 50 Cent Action, FilmRise Free Movies, Sony One Horror Hits and Cinevault. The series offering includes titles like Community, The Shield, Hell’s Kitchen, The Walking Dead, Forensic Files, Unsolved Mysteries, Deal or No Deal USA and Fear Factor. Available programmes also include Ice Road Truckers from A+E’s HISTORY. Anime fans can watch Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter and Death Note. Crunchyroll's selections also include channels dedicated to Black Clover and Box Sets. However, Sony didn't limit the service to just films and series. Live TV on PS5 also includes sports channels related to FOX Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now and UFC. The sports lineup covers disciplines such as MMA, American football, ice hockey, motorsports, golf, boxing and soccer.
News, weather and creator content also on offer
Live TV on PS5 also offers news and weather channels, so the console can double as a multimedia hub. Available sources include NBC News Now, Fox Weather and LiveNOW from FOX. Sony has also created a category devoted to online creators and specialist programmes. Users will find, among others, Hot Ones, The Ringer from Spotify and Futcrunch. The lineup also includes comedy, extreme sports, gaming and esports content. Additional content includes documentaries, podcasts and other themed programmes. Sony emphasises that the service's content will be refreshed regularly. Over time, new channels and more content will be added. The company also wants to expand Live TV on PS5 beyond the current US market. Sony is already working on making the service available in Canada and has not ruled out interest in other regions. For now, no specific timeline has been given for expanding availability outside the US.
