Sony is once again increasing prices for the PlayStation 5 and this time the scale of the changes is really significant. The price hikes will affect all versions of the console, including the Pro model and PlayStation Portal. Importantly, the new prices will come into effect very soon, so this is the last chance to purchase at the old price. This is another case in this generation where the hardware is becoming more expensive instead of cheaper. The reasons are well known, but for gamers it still means one thing—they need to prepare for a larger expense.
PS5 gets another price hike
Sony has officially confirmed price increases for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. The new prices will take effect on 2 April 2026. The biggest changes are an increase of about 100 dollars or euros for the standard models and even 150 dollars more for the Pro version. This means that console prices are now clearly higher than on the day of their release.
Since its launch in 2020, prices have already increased several times, but now they are reaching the highest levels. The Digital model, which once cost 400, is now rising to around 600, while the disc version is reaching about 650. The change is even more noticeable with the PS5 Pro, which is approaching a level of 900. In practice, this means that depending on the model, prices have increased by even several dozen percent compared to the launch.
Why Prices are Rising
Sony explains the decision by economic pressure and rising production costs. Problems with the availability of components, inflation, and the global market situation make it difficult to maintain previous prices. This is surprising, given that earlier crises, like the pandemic, did not lead to such significant price increases. However, the industry now looks completely different, and production costs are considerably higher.
If someone was planning to purchase a PS5, this is practically the last chance to do so at the old price. After April 2, new rates will apply globally. Especially with major title releases coming up, like Grand Theft Auto VI, which may further increase interest in the console.
Until now, it was standard for consoles to decrease in price over time. Now the situation is reversing, and equipment is becoming more expensive even several years after its release. This shows how much the market has changed and how significant global factors are influencing the gaming industry. For players, this means one thing: cheap gaming on the new generation is becoming less and less realistic.
