July brought a few big surprises to the PlayStation Store, with older releases particularly prominent. In both the United States and Canada, and in Europe, the most downloaded game on PS5 and PS4 was Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Other titles that ranked highly included EA Sports College Football 27, EA Sports FC 26 and Minecraft. On PS VR2, I Am Cat took first place in both regions, ahead of Synapse and Beat Saber. Sony published the full lists showing which PlayStation titles users most frequently downloaded in July.
Call of Duty dominated the PS5 and PS4 charts
The biggest winner in the July chart is without a doubt Call of Duty: Black Ops II, which took first place on both PS5 and PS4 in both regions analysed. Right behind it on PS5 was Call of Duty: Black Ops, showing that players still happily return to earlier entries in the popular series. In the United States and Canada third place went to EA Sports College Football 27, while in Europe the podium was rounded out by Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Also in the PS5 top ten were EA Sports FC 26, Palworld, Minecraft, Halo: Campaign Evolved, NBA 2K26 and Escape the Backrooms. In Europe 007 First Light and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt also placed highly, and both regions also featured hits such as UFC 6 and Grand Theft Auto V. On PS4 the situation looked similar, as here too Black Ops II claimed the top spot, with the leading positions including Black Ops III, Batman: Arkham Knight, Red Dead Redemption 2 and EA Sports FC 26.
I Am Cat leads PS VR2 charts, and Roblox wins among free games
In the PS VR2 ranking I Am Cat took first place in both regions. The title outpaced Synapse and Beat Saber in North America, while in Europe Job Simulator was second and Creed: Rise to Glory - Championship Edition came third. Other popular VR games included Metro Awakening, Alien: Rogue Incursion VR, Horizon Call of the Mountain and Arizona Sunshine VR Remake. The ranking of free games on PS5 and PS4 is also interesting. In the United States and Canada the most downloaded game was Roblox, followed by Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, Rocket League and Call of Duty: Warzone. In Europe Fortnite took first place, with Roblox in second. Rocket League, eFootball, Warzone, Fall Guys and Valorant also placed highly. July’s results show that while players are keen to pick up new releases, nostalgia for Call of Duty classics still carries a lot of weight.
July listings on the PlayStation Store show that older games remain hugely popular. Call of Duty: Black Ops II easily topped the PS5 and PS4 charts in both regions, leaving many much newer releases behind. Among PS VR2 games, I Am Cat proved the biggest hit, while in the free-to-play category Roblox and Fortnite led the way. EA Sports FC 26, Minecraft, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Batman: Arkham Knight also placed highly.
