The world of The Lord of the Rings is expanding once again. Peter Jackson has announced another film set in Tolkien's universe, which means a return to one of the most iconic franchises in film history. Importantly, this is not just one project, but two new films that are set to develop the story known from the trilogy.
Shadow of the Past return of the hobbits
A new production tentatively titled “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past” will focus on the hobbits and events following the conclusion of the main story. The plot is set to take place after the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, while also revisiting moments known from the first part of the trilogy. At the heart of the story will be Sam, Merry, and Pippin, who will set off on a journey, and a new important character will be Sam's daughter, who attempts to uncover the mysteries of the past.
The project is backed by individuals well-known to fans of the series. In addition to Jackson, the co-writer of the original trilogy returns as well. An interesting addition is Stephen Colbert, who joins as a co-writer. This may come as a surprise, but he is known as a massive fan of Tolkien's work. Thanks to this, the film has a chance to retain the atmosphere of the original while also introducing fresh ideas.
First Gollum, then the next film
Before we see Shadow of the Past, another production The Hunt for Gollum will hit cinemas, scheduled for 2027. The new film about hobbits will appear later, although the exact release date has not yet been revealed. This means that Warner Bros wants to gradually rebuild the film universe of The Lord of the Rings.
