Netflix is ruining the app on Apple TV. Users are losing important features.

Netflix has made a change that may greatly irritate Apple TV users. The new app update removes some features and worsens the viewing comfort, even though at first glance it looks like a regular refresh. The problem is that underneath, the entire video playback method has changed. Instead of using Apple’s system solution, Netflix has opted for its own player. And this is where the problems begin.

Custom player instead of system player

Netflix has replaced the native tvOS player with its own solution in the app on Apple TV. At first glance, this means greater consistency with other platforms, but in practice, users lose a lot of convenient features that were standard on Apple TV. This includes things like gesture-based fast forwarding, automatic subtitles, picture-in-picture mode, and advanced control via Siri and iPhone.

Fewer features, less control

The biggest issue is that many options have not only disappeared but also cannot be restored while watching. Some settings still exist within the system, but they are not directly accessible in the Netflix player. On top of that, users do not have the ability to revert to an older version of the app, which means the change is forced. This is another example of how streaming platforms are increasingly prioritising their own solutions at the expense of integration with the system.

Netflix has opted for its own ecosystem, but has done so at the expense of user convenience. The result is that the app on Apple TV works worse than before, even though it was theoretically meant to be improved.
