The market for physical media is not dead yet – and Magnetar has just proven this with a splash. The manufacturer showcased two new flagship 4K Blu-ray players back in September, and they are now officially available for sale in Europe, the UK, and the USA. We’re talking about the Magnetar UDP900MKII and UDP800MKII – equipment aimed at the absolute high-end that is designed to handle practically every format that can be placed in the tray or streamed from the network.
Significant improvements over previous models
The previous models UDP900 and UDP800 from 2023 were regarded as some of the best players on the market. The "MKII" takes it a step further – Magnetar has swapped the heart of the devices, introducing a much stronger video processor. The result? more accurate colours, stronger contrast, better noise reduction, and clearer upscaling. The audio section has also been refined – the new signal architecture is designed to provide cleaner sound and lower distortion when playing high-resolution formats.
New connectors, better drive and aluminium rugged casing
Both models feature USB 3.0 with isolated power supply and dedicated hubs, improving compatibility and stability of external media. The optical drive has been redesigned for quieter and more precise operation. Additionally, there is a reinforced aluminium construction with double-layer EMI shielding.
What are the differences between the models UDP900MKII and UDP800MKII?
Magnetar UDP900MKII – absolute top. The most expensive model is equipped with:
two ESS 9038 PRO DAC converters (reference class),
HDMI audio with TMDS eliminating jitter,
support for PCM up to 768 kHz and DSD512,
enhanced network functionality.
In short: this is a player for those who treat home cinema like a temple.
Magnetar UDP800MKII – strong mid high-end. The cheaper model still offers great specifications:
seven OPA1602 operational amplifiers,
more precise HDMI jitter correction,
better EMI shielding,
improved optical mechanism and copper wires.
Both models support SACD, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and in sound Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
While more and more companies are leaving the segment (Oppo, LG, Pioneer, Reavon), Magnetar shows that there is still room for high-end. Apart from it, only Sony and Panasonic remain in the game. This is good news for collectors and fans of reference quality.
