Linux runs on PlayStation 5 but there's one catch

Calendar 4/30/2026

The PlayStation 5 has finally received something that many enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting – full support for the Linux system, albeit in an unofficial form. Thanks to the work of developer Andy Nguyen, it is now possible to run Ubuntu on the Sony console, which opens up entirely new possibilities for users interested in experiments and utilising the hardware beyond gaming. However, this solution is not for everyone and requires meeting specific conditions.

How Linux Works on PS5 and What It Offers

Installing Linux on PS5 relies on using vulnerable versions of firmware, which means not every console is suitable for this. Specific system versions are required, mainly from earlier updates, and the whole process involves performing a jailbreak and launching the appropriate payload. After successfully completing all steps, the user gains access to a full Ubuntu environment, complete with a modern kernel and the ability to use features such as VRAM management, fan control, and boost mode. This allows the PS5 to function like an unusual computer, capable of handling desktop applications or programming.

Limitations and Pitfalls

Despite its impressive capabilities, the solution has quite a few limitations. Primarily, it is a so-called soft mod, meaning that after restarting the console, you have to go through the entire process of launching Linux again. Additionally, not everything works perfectly; issues arise, among other things, with Wi-Fi support, controllers, or higher refresh rates, which are currently limited to 60 Hz. Therefore, it is not a solution for the average user, but rather for enthusiasts and those who enjoy technological experiments. On the other hand, a significant advantage is that the installation does not permanently alter the Sony system, so you can always return to using the console in its standard form.

Linux on PS5 is an interesting project showcasing the potential of Sony's hardware, but so far it remains more of a curiosity than a practical solution for most gamers.
