Lexar used IFA 2026 to unveil its new Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD. The device has a card-like design and, according to the manufacturer, is the thinnest portable SSD in the world. At its thickest point the casing is about 3.8 mm, tapering to just 1 mm at the edge. The drive was designed for people who record and edit footage directly on mobile devices. The manufacturer is also using a magnetic mount intended to cut down on cable clutter.
Muse was designed primarily with mobile devices in mind
Lexar Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD uses a minimalist metal housing machined from a single piece of material. Thanks to the unibody design, the manufacturer minimised the number of joins and visible elements on the device's surface. Inside there's a specially designed, ultra-thin PCB and high-density NAND flash memory. This approach maximises the available space without sacrificing the advertised performance. The enclosure is about 3.8 mm thick at its thickest point. At the very edge the device is just 1 mm thick. One of the most interesting features is a magnetic data connection Lexar calls PogoPin. The drive can be connected with the supplied SnapLink Magnetic Cable, which uses a spring-loaded pin interface. Neodymium N52 magnets are used both in the connector and in the magnetic case. They provide precise alignment and a secure hold. The case also serves as a grip and lets you attach the SSD to the back of MagSafe-compatible iPhone models. That way the whole setup takes up little space when recording footage or working on the go. Lexar targets Muse primarily at people who need extra storage while creating content on the move.
Over 1 GB/s and ProRes 4K recording at 120 fps
In terms of performance, Muse is said to offer read speeds of up to 1050 MB/s. The maximum claimed write speed is 1000 MB/s. The drive is compatible with iPhone, iPad, Mac computers and other devices with USB-C. Particularly noteworthy is the ability to record Apple ProRes 4K directly at up to 120 fps on compatible iPhone models. The external SSD can thus serve as extra storage when capturing large video files. Muse is also intended for fast data transfer, project storage and backups. The manufacturer foresees the drive being used as additional storage for mobile devices as well. Its compact size should make it easy to use while travelling and working away from home. A magnetic system is designed to reduce the issue of tangled cables when using a phone. Lexar emphasises that Muse is part of the company’s broader strategy for mobile storage and creator solutions. The IFA 2026 presentation also includes memory technologies aimed at AI applications and B2B solutions. The Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD is due to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2026. At launch it will be available in two capacity options: 512 GB and 1 TB. Lexar has not yet announced pricing for the new drives.
