Apple may be preparing one of the biggest changes to the iPhone camera in years. New leaks suggest testing of a larger sensor and significantly higher resolution photos. There’s also a long-awaited change to the ultra-wide lens that could improve the quality of recordings. At this moment, it is unclear when exactly these technologies will make it to the final product. One thing is for sure; Apple clearly wants to elevate mobile photography.
Apple tests larger camera sensor
According to leaks, Apple is working on a sensor sized 1/1.2 inch, which would be a significant step forward compared to current solutions. Interestingly, this size is mentioned in the context of a camera with a resolution of up to 200 MP. This level is typically seen in top-tier competitors’ smartphones, not in iPhones, which have so far adhered to a more conservative approach.
A higher resolution means more detailed photos, but also some compromises. With such a high number of megapixels, individual pixels are smaller, which could affect light gathering capabilities. Apple will likely need to employ advanced image processing to avoid noise effects and maintain high photo quality, especially in lower light conditions.
Big change for the ultra-wide camera
Equally important news could be the addition of optical image stabilization (OIS) to the ultra-wide camera. Until now, Apple has not used this solution in this module. This means better stability for photos and videos, especially when recording on the move. For many users, this could be one of the most noticeable changes in everyday use.
For now, it is uncertain whether the new technologies will make it to the iPhone 18 or a later model, such as a special anniversary iPhone. Current leaks suggest that the next generation will still stick with the 48 MP camera, and more significant changes may be prepared for a more groundbreaking moment.

A larger sensor and new stabilisation technologies are steps towards even better photo and video quality.
