Phone spam has for years been one of the biggest problems for smartphone users. Apple has moved to address the issue by introducing a new Call Screening feature in iOS 26. The solution automatically intercepts calls from unknown numbers and lets the user decide whether it's worth answering. Importantly, the feature isn't part of the Apple Intelligence suite, so it works on all iPhones that support iOS 26. That means many more users will be able to take advantage of the new capability. Apple has prepared several modes of operation that can be customised to suit individual needs.
Call Screening helps cut down on unwanted calls
You can enable the new feature directly in the phone's settings. Just go to Settings, then Apps, Phone, and choose the option for filtering calls from unknown numbers. Apple offers three modes. The first leaves everything unchanged and lets all calls through. The second, recommended by the maker, automatically asks the caller for the reason for contacting you before the iPhone rings. The reply is converted to text and shown to the user, who can decide whether to answer. The third option mutes calls from unknown numbers completely and sends them straight to voicemail. This prevents the phone's owner from being unnecessarily distracted by telemarketers or scammers. Apple emphasises that the settings can be changed at any time and adjusted to your preferences.
The new feature doesn’t require Apple Intelligence and works on many iPhones
One of Call Screening’s biggest strengths is its wide availability. The feature works on all models compatible with iOS 26 and doesn’t require Apple Intelligence support or the latest Apple silicon. That means owners of older iPhones that support the new OS can use it too. The solution helps reduce unwanted calls while ensuring you don’t miss important ones, for example from a clinic, a government office or a courier company. In the mode that asks for the reason for calling, the user receives a short transcript of the caller’s response before answering. This lets you quickly judge whether the call is important. Apple says the feature was designed with everyday user comfort in mind and to minimise unnecessary interruptions. It’s one of the more practical improvements to arrive in iOS 26. For many people it could prove more effective than silencing the phone completely or manually blocking more numbers.
