Google Maps with Gemini – a new era of intelligent navigation. Discover how AI makes route planning easier, helps you report incidents and avoid traffic jams even before you start your trip.

If you often find yourself on the move, there's a good chance that Google Maps is a regular part of your daily routine. The app has been around for years and has been consistently evolving, but this time Google is adding something much bigger than cosmetic fixes. Since Gemini is now appearing in almost every Google product, it was only a matter of time before it landed in Maps as well. And it has. As reported by 9to5Google, new features based on Gemini are beginning to roll out on Android, and they'll later appear on Android Auto and iOS.

The most significant change? Gemini will replace the old voice command system. The previous solution worked, but it wasn't very smart. Now, it's supposed to feel more natural, as if you were talking to a mate who’s helping you get to your destination. You can ask questions in a multi-step way, refine your route, and take advantage of integration with other Google services. Finally, it will also be easier to report incidents on the road.

It’s not just numbers and distance

Gemini will start suggesting in a more “human” way – navigation will point out landmarks and orient you according to your surroundings, not just by the metres to the turn. Additionally, there will be the option to quickly report an accident or hazard, which will help other drivers.

Early Traffic Jam Alerts

Gemini also aims to alert you about potential traffic issues before you hit the road. This way, you'll find it easier to plan your trip and avoid surprises.

The update might not suit everyone's tastes, but most users should notice a genuine improvement in comfort. The features are already being rolled out on Android, and soon they will also be available on Android Auto and iOS. It's worth checking the latest version of the app to see if Gemini is available on your device.
