Electric cars charging in 6 minutes? CATL showcases a new generation of batteries

Calendar 4/22/2026

CATL has showcased new technologies that could completely change the way we view electric cars. The biggest attention is drawn to the third generation of Shenxing batteries, which, according to the manufacturer, can charge from 10 to 80 percent in less than 4 minutes, and nearly to full in just over 6 minutes. This pace begins to compete with traditional fuel refuelling, which until now has been one of the greatest advantages of combustion engine vehicles.

Charging as fast as refuelling

The new Shenxing battery is designed to operate quickly not only in ideal conditions but also in harsh climates. Even at minus 30 degrees, it’s possible to charge it to almost full in about 9 minutes. This is a significant change as low temperatures have been one of the biggest challenges for electric vehicles. Additionally, CATL claims that the battery will retain over 90 percent of its capacity after 1000 charging cycles, meaning that fast charging doesn’t have to equate to faster degradation.

Even Greater Range and New Technologies

Besides the Shenxing, the company also showcased the new generation Qilin battery, which is set to offer a range of up to 1000 kilometres on a single charge. Additionally, it is lighter than previous solutions, which improves the car's performance and reduces tyre wear. CATL is also developing batteries for hybrids that can provide up to 600 km of driving on electricity alone, as well as sodium-ion batteries, which are expected to enter mass production in 2026 and perform better in extreme conditions.

New solutions from CATL show that the biggest issues with electric cars, namely charging time and range, are starting to disappear quickly. If these technologies go into mass production, the difference between electric vehicles and combustion engine cars could become irrelevant sooner than many anticipated.
