Destiny 3 is reportedly in development – a well-known leaker claims the game is in an extremely early stage. Find out what this means for the future of the series and when we might expect the sequel.

It looks like after years of waiting, Destiny fans have finally received the signal they were hoping for. According to a well-known leaker and dataminer, Destiny 3 has officially entered an extremely early stage of development. This is the first such specific information in many months.

Destiny 2 in crisis – players await a new start

Destiny 2 has been in a tough spot for some time. The Final Shape in June 2024 concluded the decade-long saga of Light and Darkness, and many players assumed Bungie would announce Destiny 3 later that year. It turned out differently. Instead, the Fate Saga launched with the expansion Edge of Fate, which received very mixed reviews.

On top of that, there are record-low numbers of active players and growing concerns about the future of the series. For many fans, The Final Shape was the perfect ending to Destiny 2 – meanwhile, the studio remains silent about a full-fledged sequel.

Destiny 3 is in “extremely early development.” So says a reliable leaker

Leaker Colony Deaks posted a short but loud statement on X today: Destiny 3 is in the works. And although this information is still unconfirmed, the source has a track record of accurate leaks regarding Destiny and Marathon, many of which have been verified by The Game Post. According to his report:

“Yes, Destiny 3 is in extremely early development. We’ve had this information for several weeks, but we wanted to wait since the project is in a very early state.”

Deaks claims he decided to publish the leak only after another user said something similar. He also promises that he will reveal more details in the coming months.

Bungie is staying quiet, but the puzzle is starting to fit

At this moment, Bungie is officially focusing on Destiny 2, Fate Saga, and Year of Prophecy. The studio recently pushed back the full roadmap and State of the Game until 2026, explaining that it was necessary to refine long-term plans. If Destiny 3 is indeed in development, this move suddenly starts to make sense. It's also worth noting that Bungie was working on a separate game in the Destiny universe, codenamed Payback, developed by Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy. The project was cancelled in June, and both veterans quietly left the studio.

Meanwhile, Sony recently acknowledged that Destiny 2 "does not meet the expectations arising from the acquisition of Bungie," which led to a 204 million dollar write-down on the value of the studio. For the company, this is a signal that the brand needs a fresh start.

When could Destiny 3 come out?

If the project has just started, a realistic release date is 2029–2030. There's no hope for anything earlier. Does Destiny 3 need to happen to save the future of the series? Or perhaps Bungie should tidy up Destiny 2 first?

Let us know in the comments – the discussion on this topic will be heated.
