Apple is once again heavily promoting the film capabilities of its smartphones. As part of the MAMI Select: Filmed on iPhone program, young creators from India have created professional short films shot using the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The productions utilise features such as cinematic mode, ProRes RAW, Action Mode, and advanced image stabilisation and audio work capabilities.
Apple shows that the iPhone can replace a professional camera
Several young directors took part in the project, creating stylistically varied productions ranging from romantic stories set in nighttime Mumbai to surreal tales from Kerala and psychological dramas. The creators emphasised that the iPhone 17 Pro Max allowed them to shoot scenes that would normally require very expensive film equipment. The capabilities for night recording and the device's mobility were particularly praised. With ProRes RAW, filmmakers could significantly improve the image in post-production, increase scene brightness, and maintain natural colours even in very challenging lighting. Image stabilisation and Action Mode allowed for dynamic handheld shots, recording on boats, or running without the use of heavy stabilising equipment.
AI, MacBook Pro and iPad assisted in post-production
Apple strongly emphasises the collaboration of its entire ecosystem. Creators used MacBook Pro with M5 chip and iPad Pro for editing footage, working on sound, and controlling images on set. In some projects, AI features were also used for object tracking and accelerating special effects. Filmmakers note that the biggest advantage of the iPhone is its accessibility. Instead of renting very expensive cameras, emerging creators can record professionally looking footage with a device they have with them every day. According to program participants, this opens up entirely new opportunities for young independent cinema.
Apple is increasingly showing that the iPhone 17 Pro Max is no longer just a smartphone for recording short videos, but a real tool for professional film production. The MAMI Select program aims to inspire a new generation of creators to develop ambitious projects without the need for very expensive equipment.
