Apple has released a new update for its set-top boxes. tvOS 26.4 is arriving on Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K, introducing several significant changes, including a new audio feature designed to address one of the more annoying issues. However, the biggest new features are not available to everyone.
Continuous Audio Connection improves sound
The most important change is Continuous Audio Connection, which is a feature that maintains a constant audio connection. In practice, this means the end of issues with sound dropouts, crackling, or sudden volume changes. The system works by transmitting audio as uncompressed PCM (Dolby MAT), which ensures a more stable signal and more predictable behaviour when switching between different audio formats. However, it is worth knowing that this does not automatically mean Dolby Atmos for everything. If the equipment displays Atmos with ordinary material, it is most likely misconfigured. The feature only works on newer models, namely Apple TV 4K (2nd and 3rd generation), and requires a compatible audio system.
End of iTunes and new features in the system
Apple is finally removing the old iTunes apps, which have been practically obsolete for a long time. Now all the content is consolidated into one app, Apple TV, which simplifies the use of the system. There's also a new Genius section that is set to offer personalised movie recommendations. However, the feature is not fully operational in all regions yet. Additionally, there’s a new subtitles panel that allows for easy changes to font, size, colours, and background, without leaving the material being played. Apple is also adding standard performance and stability fixes that aim to enhance day-to-day use.
tvOS 26.4 is an update focused on the details, but very practical ones. Better sound quality, system tidiness, and new personalisation options can genuinely enhance user comfort. The biggest gains will be for users of Apple TV 4K, but even older models are receiving a few useful improvements.
