Apple reduces the "notch" on the iPhone. Face ID goes under the screen.

Calendar 2/26/2026

Apple is preparing one of the biggest visual changes to the iPhone in years. The upcoming 18 Pro model is set to have a noticeably smaller notch on the display, as part of the Face ID system will be hidden beneath the OLED matrix. It's not a revolution, but a change that users will notice straight away.

Dynamic Island finally smaller

The cutout in the screen is set to be narrowed by over 30 percent – from about 20.7 mm to 13.5 mm. Apple will hide the infrared illuminator and Face ID dot projector under the display. Only a hole for the 24 Mpix front camera will remain on the surface. Dynamic Island will still be centrally positioned and will retain its system animations, but it will take up less space when watching videos or gaming. The rumours about the complete removal of the island have not been confirmed. Apple is leaning towards evolution, not radical revolution.

Better leap in camera and performance

The iPhone 18 Pro is set to receive a camera with a variable aperture, allowing for physical control of the amount of light and naturally adjusting the depth of field. Additionally, there will be a new telephoto lens and a sensor from Samsung. The heart of the device will be the A20 Pro chip manufactured using a 2 nm process and 12 GB of RAM, which is expected to improve the performance of AI functions. The Pro Max version will feature a battery exceeding 5100 mAh and a new C2 modem with enhanced satellite connectivity. Apple is also preparing a new colour option in a deep red shade.

Apple doesn't completely eliminate the notch, but significantly reduces it and adds real improvements in the camera and performance. The iPhone 18 Pro is shaping up to be the most refined generation of the Pro line in several years.
