Apple Podcasts with video. HLS is changing the way we watch and listen to podcasts.

Calendar 2/18/2026

Apple announces a significant change in Apple Podcasts. This spring, the app will receive support for video podcasts using HLS technology, a streaming solution that the company has been developing for years. Users will be able to seamlessly switch between listening and watching modes, activate full-screen horizontal viewing, and download content for offline playback. The update is expected to work smoothly on both Wi-Fi and mobile networks. This new feature will be available on iPhones, iPads, and Apple Vision Pro. It’s one of the biggest steps in the platform's development in years.

HLS in Apple Podcasts. What does it change for users?

The new video format based on HTTP Live Streaming will allow for dynamic adjustment of image quality to network conditions. Video episodes will be fully integrated with the existing features of the app, including recommendations and thematic sections. However, the most important thing is that the user will not have to choose between audio and video. A podcast can be started as video content and then switched to audio without interrupting playback. The materials can also be saved for offline viewing.

New opportunities for creators and advertisers

The introduction of HLS also means business changes. Creators will have the ability to dynamically insert video ads, including formats read by hosts. Apple announces that it will not charge fees for the mere publication of podcasts, whether it's RSS/MP3 or HLS video. In the future, however, the company will start charging ad networks for impressions of dynamic video ads in the app. The new standard will initially be supported by Acast, ART19, Omny Studio, and SiriusXM.

The feature is already available in beta for iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4. The official rollout for all users is planned for spring. Video podcasts will also be available in the web version of Apple Podcasts.

Apple is introducing video podcasts in a way that is intended to be a natural extension of the existing experience, rather than a revolution forcing a change in habits. HLS gives creators greater control over monetisation, and users a more convenient way to engage with content. This is a signal that podcasts are entering a new phase, combining audio and video in one cohesive ecosystem.
