Apple may lower the screen quality in the iPhone 18 to fund the Pro models.

Calendar 4/22/2026

New leaks suggest that Apple may make a rather controversial decision with the iPhone 18. Instead of raising the entire line, the company is said to focus on developing the Pro models, while the base version may receive older display technology. This shows how significantly Apple is starting to diversify its devices and where the biggest investments are actually going.

Older screen in the new iPhone

According to leaks, the base iPhone 18 may use M12+ OLED technology, which is a solution based on panels known from models released a few years ago. In comparison, the Pro versions are expected to receive much newer M16 panels, which offer better energy efficiency and generally higher image quality. Practically, this means that the difference between the base model and the Pro version may be more noticeable than ever before, especially when it comes to brightness, efficiency, and overall screen experience.

Apple's strategy is starting to change

This decision is not coincidental and is driven by rising production costs, especially regarding new chips and memory. Apple may intentionally maintain a lower level of components in cheaper models to fund the development of top-tier devices. Practically, this means a greater gap between the base version and the Pro, which aims to encourage users to choose more expensive models. This is a strategy that is already working in many other segments, but here it may be more visible than before.

If this information is confirmed, the iPhone 18 in its base version may be less attractive than expected, especially for those who pay attention to the screen. Apple will likely still focus on the processor and camera in their marketing, but the technological differences between models may become one of the main topics after the launch.
