Apple is working on another major evolution of Siri, and everything indicates that it will be more than just a regular assistant update. According to the latest reports, iOS 27 will introduce the "Extensions" system, which will allow integrating external AI models with Siri. This means that Siri is no longer a closed solution and starts to function more like a hub for managing various artificial intelligences.
Siri as a “router” for AI
Instead of developing one ideal assistant, Apple is heading in a completely different direction. Siri is set to become somewhat of an intermediary that channels tasks to a chosen AI model. Users will be able to decide whether they want to utilise Google Gemini, Claude, or other tools. In practice, this might look like one AI handling text writing, another dealing with coding, and yet another searching for information. Siri will merely be the “face” of the entire system, tying everything together.
The most intriguing element of this strategy is the plan to create a special section in the App Store. It’s there that users would find and install various AI extensions, much like they currently download apps. This is a very familiar move from Apple. The company is leveraging a model that once revolutionised the smartphone market. Now it’s trying to do the same with AI, creating something akin to a marketplace for smart tools.
Apple plays on two fronts
At the same time, Apple is developing its own solutions under Apple Intelligence, while also opening up to external technologies. This strategy gives the company greater flexibility and allows it to compete with other giants without putting everything on one card. It's also a way to keep users within its ecosystem, rather than risking their migration to competitors.
If these plans come to fruition, Siri will undergo the biggest transformation in its history. From a simple assistant, it may evolve into a fully-fledged platform that integrates various AIs and provides the user with a genuine choice. This approach could completely change the way we use artificial intelligence on smartphones.
